How To Elope On PEI

Prince Edward Island is a place that I have been absolutely in love with for as long as I can remember. When you elope on PEI, you’re choosing to celebrate your special day in a setting full of beautiful beaches, stunning sunsets, gorgeous gardens, and acres upon acres of land to galavant around as we (and of course, by “we”, I mean you two and your future PEI wedding photographer) search for the perfect spot to capture amazing candids.

So, Why A PEI Elopement?

Elopements are an easy, fairly inexpensive, and exciting way to get married. It allows you some room to be spontaneous, to throw caution to the wind and see what kind of adventures you and your forever someone can get into. An elopement is a unique way to get married that represents you!

When you combine those reasons with the idea of an elopement that can be as quick, fun, and intimate as you would like it to be? The possibilities feel pretty endless. Plus?! The money you save by eloping gives you a little extra budget to adventure around the island while you’re there.

Reasons To Elope On PEI

1. It’s All About The Two Of You

When you elope on Prince Edward Island, you have the opportunity to truly make the moment all about YOU! You don’t have to consider what 200 guests can eat, who’s allergic to gluten, and what group of cousins might be feuding with another group.

It’s an intimate way of celebrating your love with the people who mean the most. You can hold a small ceremony with just a few of your closest friends and family followed by an adventure around the island with just the two of you!

Eloping is for the dreamers, the romantics, the escapists. The couple that’s ready to throw caution to the wind and embrace the idea of a mini wedding in PEI!

2. It’s Friendly For Your Budget And Your Mental Health

I’ve known people who have eloped for under $5k – depending on what you’re aiming for, how good you are at finding deals, and what it is that you want to do during your time on Prince Edward.

Looking for elopement packages in PEI is easy because there are quite a few venues here that offer a variety of budget-friendly choices! Plus, with an PEI elopement package, you’re able to have quite a bit of the work included. A few of my tops are:

  • The Sunset Room wedding venue: This beachside venue is nothing but open windows, natural light, and beachside property. It’s a perfect space for a weekend elopement – and is killer for PEI wedding photography because of the views.
  • New London Carriage House wedding venue: Rustic sophistication with both indoor and outdoor spaces and acres of land to play on. It can be big, but it can also be quaint. Especially in the outdoor spaces.
  • The Harris Church Cottage wedding venue: This is such an intimate and cozy venue to elope on PEI. It evokes a feeling of home and makes everyone in your small but sweet wedding party feel as if they belong there.

3. Plan For The Off Days: Monday Through Thursday Are Best!

Bucking tradition is a key component of an elopement, and that includes the tradition of holding your wedding on a weekend. When it comes to keeping it budget-friendly, planning to elope on PEI during the week is the way to go! Especially during tourist season. This brings us to our next tip on the list…

4. Pick A Date Between Late Spring & Early Fall For Weather Purposes – And Pack Accordingly

Prince Edward Island is known for many things, and the weather being a bit unpredictable is one of them! At least when it comes to certain seasons.

When it comes to finding a time that has a decent amount of sun, warm weather, and a lack of major rainfall, you’ll want to aim for late May through early October. You should hold your ceremony 2-3 hours before sunset or near sunrise for the best lighting (note: if you’re going for a PEI National Park elopement, they’re usually best done before 9am to avoid tourists).

Considering that an elopement’s theme is often less is more, you don’t want to overpack but you want to be prepared. Check out my series on PEI weddings by season to get an in-depth look at weather and attire needs.

Oh, and no matter the weather? Snacks. I always suggest bringing along some of your favorite snacks. Who doesn’t need a snack during an adventure?

5. Cross The T’s And Dot The I’s: License, Paperwork, And All That Fun Stuff!

Getting married or eloping in PEI isn’t too complicated of a process, but you still want to make sure to get your license and paperwork completed ahead of time! Things like who can act as a witness and what documentation you need to bring with you, if any, are key. All the information on how to elope in PEI can be found here

Fun fact? As your PEI wedding photographer, I can act as a witness, which means you’ll only need one more! It’s a service I love being able to provide to happy couples – and if for some reason you need two witnesses? My father volunteers as tribute.
